Long Drive Challenge 2008 Results

Grand Finals

5th November 2008 - Saujana Golf & Country Club.

11am and the juniors were ready to rock and roll. Mohd Azman stood on the tee with his family looking on having just driven through the night from Kedah just to see their son crush the winning drive of 308.7 yards. It was a long wait but the pressure of the finals seemed to get the better of all the rest. Favorites like Daniel Loh Ming Wei and Ilyia Jamil had to compete in a 1 ball shoot out for 3rd place.

The ladies were up next with the early leader and National record holder Cindy Koh Yeen Leng having to wait till the last competitor June Yap to knock her of her perch and take the finals with a final drive of 225.6 yards

The press were out in force also including TV3, NTV7, NST Star ,Par Golf, Golf Digest and Malay Mail to name a few

The pressure of the Grand Finals seemed to affect the Seniors the most. With many of the favourites, including the National record holder Paul Ow Chee Cheoon, failing to hit the fairway. In front of a packed tee with almost no room for any more spectators Zakaria Mohd got onto the tee and crushed the winning shot of 282 yards to great applause.

The Open finals were what everyone was waiting for. The leader board changed consistently. The crowd support was unbelievable, but the pressure of the big stage soon sorted the men from the boys. Justin Wong Jie Hau’s winning drive was so spectacular and powerful that he snapped his driver in half. Favourite Divan Du Piesanie put up a great fight and really got the crowed going with a fired up 6 balls.

Overall the whole event was a great success and the FusionExcel Long Drive Challenge is here to stay.

4th & 5th November 2008 - Qualifying - Saujana Golf & Country Club

The final qualifying brought out all the big guns. As the popularity grew and the word spread after the successful first 3 qualifying legs in Penang, Johor Bahru and KGSAAS, we had people lining up even before the event started.

The Amateurs’ finally got to strut their stuff against some of Malaysia’s top professionals including Rizam Ali, Hanafiah Jamil, Mohd Paizal Bee, Mohd Zurie, Mohd Khairul, Nazri B Najid, Zamri Sariff and Mohd Rusli Johari.
But the Amateurs were not intimidated by the Pro’s and soon dominated the leader board.

For the first time we had so many people lining up we had to have 2 people on the tee at once. Even with a 2 hours rain delay no one left. So with record entrance and over 1000 people coming to the event the FusionExcel Long Drive Challenge was really ready for its finals.

With heavy rain first thing in the morning it looked like qualifying may be a non starter. But by 930am the tee box was open and people were lining up to hit. From the start there was 2 people on the tee and the measurers and scorers were put to the test. When registration closed there was still a crowd of people wanting to qualify or just improve their qualifying position.

The 3rd leg of the FusionExcel Long Drive Challenge was another great success with over 1000 people once again attending the event. As we get closer to the finals the competition is hotting up for those valuable final spots.

KGSAAS was the venue for the first qualifying in the Klang Valley with people already queuing up by the time we kicked off at 9am. The leaderboard changed numerous time during the course of the day as there were people on the tee right up until close of registration.

The Golf Fair was much larger than Penang and Johor and the special offers from all the exhibitors put smiles on all the buyers faces.  The title sponsor FusionExcel was out in full force demonstrating the Quantum Science products.

The second leg of the FE Long Drive Challenge was held at the Palm Resort and Country Club, Johor Bahru, on 22nd October 2008.

Just like Penang, it was another very exciting showdown between 100 over competitors from all over the world, including from South America, Singapore, Australia and South Africa.

We also had our first International qualifiers, one from Korea and one from South Africa, the 21 year old Divan Piesamie who managed to top the leader board at the end of the day and qualify for the Grand Finals on the 5th of November.

The leader board changed consistently throughout the day with many competitors having to re-enter just to stay on the board.

Again there were over 1000 people walking around the golf fair taking advantage of the many great discounts and benefits from the merchants.

The open division was won by Justin Wong. Jason was lying 5th all day and with a last minute entry managed to overtake everyone with his 3rd last ball. There was also a very exciting shoot out for second place between Professional golfer Hanafiah Jamil and Amateur K.Gunalan who both ended the day with the same distance. Hanafiah managed to edge out K Gunalan by only 0.4 of a meter in the 6 ball shootout.

The Senior’s division were at it all day, with the winners having to all enter more that once to claim the final position. In the end Mr Teoh Peng Kheng found his way to the top of the leader board followed by a last ball runner up Mr Peter Lim.
